Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, at Long Beach California. DuVernay received support from her Aunt Denise when she was just a young girl. Her aunt was a nurse, who did night shifts to ensure that she could dedicate her time to theatre and literature as well as art. The aunt introduced DuVernay the 1961 film West Side Story and DuVernay became enthralled by the film. DuVernay discovered by watching her mother's model of the power of art as an instrument for activism. Similar to DuVernay's mom, she was conscious of her social status and influenced the importance of speaking up through the art of. DuVernay had her summers spent in Lowndes County Alabama, where the father of DuVernay was born and brought up. Her father was awed by the historical civil rights marches across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the neighboring town Selma Alabama. The summers DuVernay spent there would later inspire her to write a script for a film based on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in California in the year 1990. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and received degrees in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay started broadcasting journalism at the age of a student. Her first job was as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being instructed to look at the trash of the home of a juror. Her disappointment was evident in the journalism assignments she was assigned and chose to move into the public relations industry. DuVernay got her first job as a publicist at a small production studio right out of high school. Her private PR company, The DuVernay Agency was created in 1999. She also started several lifestyles and promotion networks such as Urban Beauty Collective. Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful, and Urban Thought Collective.
